Report human trafficking

Human trafficking is a serious crime and a violation of human rights. It happens when someone uses force, fraud, or coercion to exploit another person for labor or for commercial sex.

At Uber, we’re committed to preventing human trafficking by partnering with expert anti-trafficking organizations, including PACT and Polaris, to raise awareness and help drivers recognize warning signs. With your help, we can make a real difference.

Signs of human trafficking:

There are several ways to identify human trafficking.

Location

  • Pickups or drop-offs at or near hotels, motels, or transportation hubs, particularly late at night
  • Riders going to/from locations that seem unsafe for minors or vulnerable people, or where people seem closely monitored
  • Deliveries to/from businesses where workers seem fearful or overworked, or are not allowed to speak freely

Behavior

  • Riders who appear scared, disoriented, or unusually quiet and submissive, or show signs of abuse (bruising, cuts, etc)
  • Guest Riders traveling without the Account Holder and who may be unsure of their destination or basic details about the trip

Interactions

  • Riders who are not in control of their own identification, wallet, or phone
  • Riders who use multiple phones simultaneously or possesses an excessive amount of cash
  • Signs of a controlling interaction emerge between the passengers, like riders being coached to lie about their age or identity
  • Guest riders traveling without the Account Holder who are unsure of their destination or basic trip details.

If you see several of these signs at the same time, that may mean that the person is being trafficked. Even one sign may be enough, if you feel like something isn’t quite right - trust your instincts.

How to report:

If you suspect someone is being trafficked, follow these steps:

1. Stay safe and don’t intervene.

Never confront anyone directly. It could put your safety at risk. If a Rider is in distress or an unaccompanied minor you suspect is a victim, and you need to cancel the trip, make sure they’re in a safe and well-lit location before leaving. If their safety is at risk, or if you’re unsure, call 911.

2. Report it.

Once you are safe, and without putting yourself at risk, report your suspicions.

If you believe a rider is in immediate danger, call 911. For non-emergencies, you can anonymously report your concerns to the National Human Trafficking Hotline, which is available 24/7 & free:

Call: 1-888-373-7888 or Text: HELP. to 233733
